Shelter City

On August 24th, Peace Brigades International organized a film screening and discussion event about El Salvador with our Shelter City Guest María Luz Nóchez.

Peace Brigades International has the chance to welcome a new shelter city guest this summer! María Luz Nóchez, a journalist from El Salvador, arrived in the Netherlands in mid-June, and she will be staying in Utrecht until the end of August.  

María works for El Faro, the first digital newspaper in Latin America, founded in El Salvador twenty-five years ago.

Op vrijdag 3 februari 2022 werd de tentoonstelling ‘UtRecht van de Mens’ geopend in het Stadskantoor in Utrecht. Shelter City Utrecht is een onderdeel van de tentoonstelling die in de ontvangsthal van het Stadskantoor staat, met een videoscherm en foto’s van Shelter City gasten. De thematentoonstelling is vanaf nu gratis te bekijken, tot januari 2024.

On November 24th, PBI organized a film screening and discussion about Venezuela with our Shelter City guest Neyls. Neyls also took part in a discussion after the two documentaries were shown, with moderator and PBI volunteer Sarah and translator Hania.

Shelter City Utrecht & Peace Brigades International invite you to the film screening of not one, but two short films! The focus of the evening will be on Venezuela and the 2017 protests. In the first film ‘Where Chaos Reigns’ we will follow Daniella, a young medical student who has rounded up her peers and created a paramedic group called „Green Crosses” in an effort to help those injured in the protests.

Justice & Peace Nederland heeft een impact study laten uitvoeren voor het Shelter City project in Nederland, waar PBI ook onderdeel van is. De studie is uitgevoerd met als doel te onderzoeken wat het project de mensenrechtenverdedigers heeft gebracht. Aan de hand van interviews, groepsdiscussies en documenten is er gekeken naar de impact van Shelter City op de mensenrechtenverdedigers.

Er zijn verschillende interessante uitkomsten van de studie, vooral positieve.

On Thursday the 1st of September, PBI organized a film screening and discussion on LGBTQ+ and women’s rights in Poland together with our current Shelter City guest Marta Lempart. Marta also took part in the discussion after the film, together with Agata Korycka, director and screenwriter of ‘By the River’.

Raúl is nog maar net vertrokken terug naar Mexico, en de volgende gast voor Shelter City Utrecht staat alweer voor de deur! Deze keer is het mensenrechtenverdediger Marta uit Polen.

Shelter City Utrecht & Peace Brigades International invite you to the film screening of ‘The Night Flowers‘, an award-winning, warm and casually composed portrait of a group of queer young people in Mexico who are trying to feel at home in their conservative environment while preserving their often hard-won identities.

Following the screening, we will discuss more in-depth the greater context of LGBTIQ+ rights and freedom in Mexico.
